Now if you’re new here, I am not one of those rumor spreading blogs. I only report on things that I am extremely confident are going to happen and confirm them through multiple sources. For example the Rick Tocchet hiring, I didn’t report on it until I knew he was going to be hired you can read that here.
Sooooo, that being said I know there have been a couple of reports out there and I can confirm that the Flyers and Tyson Foerster are working on finalizing a contract extension.
It will most likely be a bridge type of contract as the 23 year old will look to further establish himself as a top 6 forward in the NHL before he becomes eligible for UFA status.
I believe that it will be a 3 year deal somewhere in the range of $4-5M AAV. Could end up being a 4 year deal but I’m leaning more towards the 3 year.
Foerster capped off his great season with a decent showing at the World Championships for Team Canada. He became the first Flyer to score 20 or more goals in his first two seasons since Simon Gagne back in 2000-01. He was a bright spot for the team this season and we still haven’t seen his full potential.
This new contract will be Tyson’s chance to show that he is talented enough to be a top 6 guy on this team for years to come. Get him on a line with the right people and he could easily be a 30 to 40 goal scorer in my opinion.
Slowly but surely, the Flyers are moving into the next steps of the rebuild. Foerster outplaying this next contract would be huge for this organization. He took a nice step last season but he will need to take even more of a jump this year to help accelerate this rebuild.
This could be the first domino to fall when it comes the RFAs for the Flyers. We are inching closer and closer to the offseaon being in full swing and I’d like to think Danny and Jonesy would like to have these guys locked up before the NHL Draft.
