Why Is Danny Briere Clearing Cap Space?

On Sunday morning the Philadelphia Flyers traded away goaltender Ivan Fedotov for a 6th round pick. It seemingly came out of nowhere but the Flyers had been trying to move one of their goalies. Now the logjam that the Flyers had between the pipes has one less log.

The Flyers had high hopes for Fedotov a few years ago after his performance at the Olympics. Unfortunately, he had a situation in regard to his military service that was very messy. Then when he was finally able to come over and play for the Flyers it went less than ideal.

Look, I don’t think he ever got a fair chance here as the team in front of him was very bad and the way that Tortorella handled the goalies last season wasn’t great. But at the end of the day Fedotov no longer had a spot here with the Flyers.

Now, this trade confirms that Aleksei Kolosov will in fact be here for training camp AND that he is okay will possibly playing for the Lehigh Valley Phantoms. Last year that became a hot topic as it appeared that Kolosov only wanted to be here if he was in the NHL. Why the change in mind? Well more than likely his agent found out that there wasn’t much of a market out there in the NHL for him especially after a subpar season last year.

This means that the Flyers have opted to go with the younger Kolosov over Fedotov. It makes sense as Kolosov does have great potential and even after a rough first year here in North America, the Flyers still think very highly of him.

One of the biggest things that this trade does for the Flyers is it clears up a little over three million in cap space. Yes, unfortunately the Flyers are still dealing with cap issues but Danny Briere is slowly but surely getting us out of cap hell and has not brought in many bad contracts.

Other than getting the Flyers out of cap hell and helping gain more flexibility heading into the season, why else could Danny Briere be clearing cap space?

As much as many fans don’t want to hear it, the Philadelphia Flyers are already planning and have been planning for the 2026 free agent class. Yes, out of those names above there probably isn’t going to be many that hit the open market come July 1st, but there are going to be some big names that do.

The salary cap is going to be taking a massive jump over the next few seasons and we are already starting to see some of these bigger names turn down long term deals. Why? Because they know that when that cap goes up some of them could see a VERY big pay day.

The Flyers are trying to take the next steps in the rebuild. How do you do that? Well first step is this season there needs to be a step forward by the guys that are currently here. This season, with the offseason moves and the younger guys having another year of experience the Flyers should be competing for a playoff spot.

They are doing a great job of building through the draft and hopefully some of their most recent picks end up hitting in a big way. But the next step in the rebuild is adding top talent to the lineup. Sure a trade would work, but adding someone from free agency is a much better option so you don’t have to give up assets. Having as much cap space as you can with a potential free agency class like the 2026 one is a great position to be in.

They have already added a talented player via trade by bringing in Trevor Zegras this offseason. Now, this season they need to take the next step and make the playoffs to become an even more attractive destination for one of these top potential free agents.

This upcoming season and next offseason are going to be key moments for the future of the Philadelphia Flyers. They are going to be even more important for the men in charge, Keith Jones and Danny Briere. It’s going to be a make or break time for their tenure.

Training camp starts later on this week for the Flyers.
