The Flyers Need To Address The Goaltending Problem

I am well aware we are still in preseason and maybe I am overreacting already but I don’t think that is the case. The Flyers goaltending absolutely STINKS.

This was from last Tuesday night against the Habs and it’s something that we have seen from Sam Ersson before. A weak goal getting by him, whether it’s been early in a game or later in a game it has happened too many times.

Errson is not a true number 1 goaltender and the Flyers didn’t do anything to help their cause this offseason either. They brought in Dan Vladar who has a career SV % of .895 and a GAA of 3.00. Safe to say the combination of those two going into the season is less than ideal.

Then there is Aleksei Kolosov…He is still only 23 years old and he struggled last year in his first season in North America. Granted he looked pretty good in the first two outings of the preseason. But then there was Thursday nights game against the Capitals. He came in at the start of the second period and man the goals that he let up were brutal. He’s not the biggest guy and he’s a butterfly goalie but he looked like he didn’t know how big the net was at times. Clearly he needs to be better at covering the top of the net.

Oh and lets not forget this weak goal he let in. Sure there bodies in front and you can blame the defense but this has to be stopped.

It appears as if Kolosov is going to start with the Phantoms as the Flyers don’t look like they want to carry 3 goalies to start the season. Kolosov should hopefully benefit from playing in the AHL and maybe he can find his game there.

Vladar looked solid last night against the Bruins as the Flyers picked up a win in the shootout.

It is less than an ideal situation that the Flyers are going to be starting their season with Ersson and Vladar but it is what it is. Maybe we will be pleasantly surprised and Ersson and Vladar will be solid in net. I don’t have high hopes for that but we’ll see. My hope is that Kolosov plays well in the minors and he can be the internal solution, if not goaltending needs to be the number one priority as we get further along in the season and around the trade deadline if this team is within distance of a playoff spot.
